Leaky Gut leads to Type I Diabetes

by John Erickson on July 30, 2011

Type I Diabetes is also known as Insulin Dependent Diabetes. It is caused by an autoimmune attack to the Pancreas (the organ that produces insulin for blood sugar regulation) which destroys the cells that produce insulin. Type I Diabetics must take insulin shots for the rest of their lives.

In the 2006 “Diabetologia” a research article was published that said, “These findings indicated the presence of an intestinal permeability associated with type 1 diabetes that is already detectable before clinical onset of the disease. The findings also suggest that the small intestine is an organ participating in the pathogenetic process of type 1 diabetes.” [emphasis added] Diabetologia. 2006 Dec; 49 (12): 2824-7.  Epub 2006 Oct. 7, “Increased intestinal permeability precedes clinical onset of type 1 diabetes.”

Digestive health is so important and yet so little understood.

Dr. E.
